Leaving a Legacy
Toh Han Lin
It’s great to be able to walk past an iconic
building and say: 'I did that!'
Principal Engineer,
CPG Consultants
ost of us want to leave a legacy, but not many can walk past it on a daily basis. For principal engineer Toh Han Lin, his legacy is the buildings he has been involved in creating.
“I have been in this line for the last seven years, starting as a junior engineer at CPG Consultants and working my way up,” says Han Lin. Today he heads his own team and mentors juniors coming up through the ranks. The many roles he has to play keep the job challenging for him. “I liaise with clients, architects and other engineers on co-ordination issues, prepare tender specifications and documents, submit requests to authorities, manage site progress and deal with problems, if any, after the project is complete,” this competent engineer sums up.
Han Lin is proud to show his wife and twenty–one-month-old son his successes, which include the Pan Pacific Suites. “It’s great to be able to walk past an iconic building and say: 'I did that!'” he laughs, cognisant that it is, of course, a team effort.
Currently involved in what will be yet another iconic landmark in Singapore, Gardens by the Bay, Han Lin is presently stationed at Marina South overseeing the construction of a 50 ha garden with many iconic features inside. “We are now working on the construction of a new lake, a new road, land formation and a variety of different buildings and bridges for the gardens,” explains Han Lin.
Asked how he copes with the stress of a busy schedule, Han Lin explains that it’s a matter of prioritising the work to be done, and balancing work and home life. Time away from work is spent exploring nature with his family and volunteering his time to help young professionals aspiring to join the profession. Han Lin has recently been nominated as the first chairman of the Association of Consulting Engineers Singapore (ACES) Young Professionals Connection, a platform that allows young professionals to make a positive and sustainable difference within the consulting engineering profession. Through Han Lin’s leadership, ACES hopes to promote the profession and engage the young so that they, like Han Lin, may one day leave their legacy.
