hen you meet Kah Huay, the word “engineer” does not spring to mind. However, this lively and confident Victoria Junior College (VJC) alumnus is tougher than she looks. Active in sports such as taekwondo, her academic choice is just as challenging, for Kah Huay has embarked on a course in Environmental Engineering at NUS sponsored by the inaugural BCA Green Mark Champion, City Developments Limited (CDL).
So what made this environmentally concerned student apply for an engineering scholarship?
When I heard I had been awarded the scholarship, I was so happy all day, and work colleagues wanted to know what the excitement was all about.
Kah Huay conducted her own research into a suitable career and found that she was drawn to engineering after reading about the potential of the industry, and in particular, CDL’s leadership in green development.
“My views on the environment and the incorporation of eco-friendly designs into engineering are very much in line with those pursued by CDL,” she muses. “Taking up the course in Environmental Engineering will expose me to even more ways to help the environment and I’m looking forward to it.”
Asked what advice she would give to students considering a career in the built environment, Kah Huay confidently states, “Follow your heart—your belief and passion will guide you best. If you wish to be a part of the future efforts to combat the effects of the environment on our society and the Earth at large, Environmental Engineering is definitely yours for the picking!”
