ennis aficionado, Kenneth Lee, is as competitive in his work as he is on the tennis court. This electrical engineer from Meinhardt graduated only two years ago, but is already involved in one of the most high-profile construction projects in Singapore’s recent history – The Sentosa Integrated Resort.
“At
present, I handle the design of the electrical systems for a six-star hotel as well as co-handle the casino and another five-star hotel, also within the project,” Kenneth explains, adding that he is looking forward to completing the project so he can proudly show his wife and family what he has been a part of. “Seeing your project completed right in front of you is the greatest reward this line can offer,” he says. Still relatively new to the industry, Kenneth is using his time on the Integrated Resort project to learn as much as he can. “The technical aspects have been a challenge, but it has been an invaluable learning experience that I can take with me into future projects.”
A greater challenge has been establishing credibility due to his youthful appearance.“I look much younger than my age, so dealing with contractors on site who are double or triple my age is definitely the hardest thing I have to deal with,” Kenneth remarks, “but I take it in my own stride.” He offers a valuable word of advice for those considering a career in electrical engineering: “You have to have passion for the work as it is tougher when you are starting out and the technicalities can be very challenging.”
But
for Kenneth, it’s all worth it. He balances his time and deals with stress by playing sports, particularly tennis, and catching up with friends for a drink. He has even started sky diving. This works well for him as he remains dedicated to his career and looks forward to management roles down the line. “Currently I play a supporting role, but I hope to lead my own team within another two to three years.” Judging by the stamina and determination he displays on the tennis court, that day shouldn’t be too far off at all.
